| Inverters come in many sizes and with lots of different features.
Generally, there are two types Pure Sine wave and "Modified" Sine Wave.
Trouble is not all waves are created equal and like most products some
are better than others for various reasons. Also, generally, you get
what you pay for. Outback and MagnaSine are both good devices and
designed by the people who founded Trace Inverters which was bought by
Xantrex a few years ago in an attempt to control the small inverter
market. Others like SMA America have European origins but with models
that work fine in the 120v 60hz North American market.
One key thing to note is that if you plan to do Net-Metering and feed
power into the grid you will need to have an inverter that complies
with UL Std 1741 which most utilities require as a safety feature.
Basically UL1741 requires the inverter to be able to disconnect from
the grid automatically within 2milliseconds in case of any power failure or even a minor fluctuation . . .and not reconnect until it
has 5 minutes of continuous power from the grid. Unfortunately, this
means that when you have nay fluctuation in a power source including
the grid the system must be off-line for at least 5 minutes even if the
problem itself was only a few milliseconds. And when it is connected if
you only have a few hundred watts to feed back to the grid . . . if you
have a 3500Watt inverter it's not going to be operating at peak
efficiency and may waste half of the energy you are trying to save in
the grid connection. For small home systems generating less than 2-3
Kilowatts most of the time, more often than not, you'll actually save
more energy by storing it in a battery than trying to send it to the
grid through an inverter operating at 50% efficiency.
Here are a few examples with a rough budget for a power management
assembly. It normally should include lightning arrestors, monitoring
devices and circuit breakers etc. . . so make sure you are getting a

needs.
