Canada Wind Atlas
Ontario Wind Atlas
NOVA SCOTIA Wind Atlas
A wind atlas is a tool primarily used by commercial wind companies to "prospect" for good wind locations. They are only a "helpful guide" for private turbine owners. Most of the data these sites use is calculated based on some sophisticated atmospheric model and an earth topography that is only roughly accurate below 100feet (30M). If you compare Lat/Longs from a hand held GPS (Global Positioning System) or from Google Earth you'll find they often differ by a few kilometers . . . not very handy if you are looking for wind in your back yard.
Still they offer a general sense of how windy your local neighborhood is compared to a few kilometers away. Also the data is only roughly accurate at about 100ft. Atlases that claim to give you 10M data are fooling themselves and you because local trees and houses are often higher than 30ft (10M) and these obstacles will significantly affect the accuracy of any calculated data.
So use this as a GUIDE and assume that the actual wind on your 50 or even 75ft tower will be less than the model suggests by as much as 20-40%. The best way to assess wind on your property is with a kite or a balloon with streamers . . or an anemometer . . . but for the cost of any decent anemometer and computer and tower and software you can put up a small wind turbine and find out how much ENERGY there is instead of how much POTENTIAL ENERGY there is.
The Canadian Wind Atlas is good but the Ontario Wind Atlas is better for use in Ontario. Also try using Google Earth to find your property and then see how closely the locations relate to the Wind Atlas data. Then go to your property with a kite or Balloon and some streamers and find out where the turbulence is and where the LAMINAR FLOW is over your property. that will tell you a lot more than any wind atlas about how well a small turbine will perform.
